Indie iOS User Acquisition

Indie iOS user acquisition is how a solo or tiny team gets people to install a live App Store product without a growth department. The constraints are the point: limited cash, no creative studio, no time to become a full-time media buyer, and a store listing that has to convert strangers who arrived from a video, a search, or a friend’s screenshot.

UA here is a stack, not a silver bullet. ASO, Apple Search Ads, content, communities, and creators all buy different moments. The founder’s job is to pick two and execute them, not to “do marketing” in the abstract.

Why it matters

Most indie iOS obituaries are distribution obituaries. The binary compiled. TestFlight friends were polite. Downloads after week four look like a rounding error. Paid ads, tried once at $20/day with App Store screenshots as creative, “didn’t work.” Influencers felt slimy or expensive. The founder returns to features.

That loop is rational if every channel is priced for a Series A consumer company. It is less rational if you treat UA as matching: who already wants this outcome, where do they hang out, and what is the smallest honest experiment.

Indie economics are unforgiving. A $2.99 IAP or a $19.99/year sub cannot fund a $5,000/month influencer CRM and a $150k agency. You need channels where a few hundred dollars plus a weekend of attention can produce a signal, even if the signal is “this niche does not care.” Silence is expensive in its own way; you keep building the wrong thing.

A realistic stack (no invented CPIs)

Store listing as landing page. Screenshots, preview video, subtitle, and first review batch. Creator traffic that hits a vague listing is wasted. This is ASO, and it is the cheapest conversion work you will do.

Apple Search Ads / exact queries. Captures people already searching. Great when you have category intent; useless as a demand-creation engine. Do not confuse it with TikTok.

Founder content. If you can talk on camera, you own a channel with zero talent fees. Most engineers cannot or will not. That is allowed. Do not guilt yourself into becoming a creator if you will quit in ten days.

Communities. Reddit, Discord, niche newsletters: only where you are a real participant. Drive-by launch spam trains those rooms to ignore you.

Creators. People your ICP already watches, briefed on a real problem, with an install path. This is the demand-creation channel that still looks like the internet your users use. Discovery quality decides whether it is a channel or a regret.

Measure what you can: product page conversion rate, paid CPI where the platform gives it, and directional lifts around a creator post. Do not fake last-click ROAS on organic For You distribution. See measuring creator-driven installs.

How JumpTrend approaches it

JumpTrend is built for this buyer: indie iOS founders with a live app and flat downloads; SaaS founders with no growth hire; solo engineers who would rather write code than cold DMs. It is not built for agencies or companies that already have a growth team.

The method is creator-powered UA via an avatar algorithm on real phones (TikTok and Instagram). Plans: Scout $1,500, Outreach $2,500, Dealmaker $5,000 per month. Creator fees extra. No demo, no sales call. No guaranteed download number. JumpTrend guarantees the matching work it controls.

Use Scout if you will do the emails. Use Outreach if the inbox is why you have not started. Use Contract when you are ready for paperwork on every deal. If your UA plan is “wait for the algorithm to notice my App Store page,” you are hoping. Indie iOS UA is choosing a distribution hypothesis and running it at a price you can survive.

FAQ

What UA channels actually fit a solo iOS founder?

ASO and a decent product page, Apple Search Ads if you have query coverage, organic communities you already belong to, and creators who already talk about the problem. Wide Meta/TikTok prospecting without creative that looks native is usually tuition, not a system.

I have no marketing budget. Where do I start?

Fix conversion on the listing first (screenshots, subtitle, reviews). Then either film your own demos or seed the app to nano creators. Paid creator posts and Spark Ads come after you can describe a user in a sentence and can afford a miss.

Is Product Hunt a UA channel?

It is a launch event. Treat the spike as a chance to collect reviews and learn messaging, not as a recurring install engine.

When is JumpTrend the wrong tool?

If you have no live app, no way to pay a creator after you approve a rate, or a product that cannot be shown on a phone camera in fifteen seconds. Also if you already have a growth team and a database seat.
