Instagram Creator Discovery
Instagram creator discovery is the job of finding accounts whose Reels, Stories, or feed posts reach the people you want as users, before you spend a dollar or a weekend on DMs. On Instagram the temptation is to trust follower counts, media kits, and hashtag search. Those objects describe an account. They do not describe what a specific kind of person is being shown this week.
Discovery done well looks like a shortlist: handles that recur in an ideal-customer session, with a public contact and a content style that can show an app without looking like a catalog ad.
Why it matters to an indie iOS or SaaS founder
Instagram is still where a lot of lifestyle, fitness, parenting, food, fashion-adjacent, and “that girl routine” attention lives. If your app’s screenshots would make sense next to a Recents camera roll, Reels is a native surface. Indie founders skip it because the official path appears to be: buy a seat on a database, filter for “US, 10k–50k, engagement rate > X,” export emails, pray.
That path is built for a brand with a creator manager. It also systematically misses the account that is popping in your user’s Explore this month but has not updated their media kit since 2023. You care about distribution into a person, not about a row in a 350-million-profile index.
Bad discovery has a direct cash cost. Instagram rates for even modest accounts can exceed a month of indie revenue if you pick like a media buyer instead of like a user. Good discovery is how micro-influencers (often more willing to actually open TestFlight) show up instead of lifestyle macros who will bury your app at second 18 of a PR haul.
How to discover on Instagram without lying to yourself
Define the avatar tighter than a demographic. “Women 25–34, US” is how ads are bought. “Someone who films their Pilates recovery and already tried three habit trackers” is how you recognize a relevant Reel in five seconds.
Watch the session, not the profile first. Open Reels as that person would: language, topics, accounts you know they follow. Note who keeps appearing. Then open profiles. A creator who never shows up in the session is a database hit, not a feed hit.
Prefer proof in comments over vanity bios. “Link in bio for my app recs” is a business. “Does anyone else forget to log this” is a user community. Apps need the second more than the first.
Collect contacts as you go. Many creators list email, a form, or a management contact in bio. Use what they publish for business inquiries.
Do not confuse brand deals with fit. An account full of obvious paid skincare may still be right if your app is a skincare log. An account full of obvious paid everything is a billboard. Billboards are priced like billboards.
How JumpTrend approaches it
JumpTrend does not sell an Instagram creator database. It runs real phones, scrolls Instagram (and TikTok) as the avatar you define, and returns the creators trending in that feed. Hashtag tools search what people tagged. The avatar algorithm scrolls what the customer gets served.
Instagram discovery is included in every plan because the scroll is the product. Scout ($1,500/month) hands you the list. Outreach ($2,500) contacts them. Dealmaker ($5,000) adds contracts you approve. Creator fees are extra. No demo, no sales call.
If you already live in a large creator indexer and have a team unlocking emails against Shopify orders, keep your indexer. JumpTrend is solving a different question (who is in the ICP’s actual Reels, right now). If you are the founder and you have been meaning to find Instagram people for six months, discovery was never going to be a Saturday hashtag search.
FAQ
Is Instagram still useful if my users live on TikTok?
Many consumer niches still run a dual feed: the same creator posts Reels and TikToks, or the same user watches both. Discover on both. Do not assume the Instagram graph is dead because For You is louder.
Should I search hashtags like #iosapps?
You can, as a weak signal. Hashtag lists include leftover collab spam and people who tagged once. A session in the avatar's Explore/Reels feed shows who Instagram is actually distributing to that person.
Do I need a creator marketplace account to find people?
No. Marketplaces and databases are one discovery method. Feed-as-avatar scrolling is another. For a solo founder, the marketplace UI is often more product than you needed.
Reels or feed posts?
For app demos, short Reels (and Stories for a reminder where available) are the format that behaves like TikTok. Static grid posts rarely carry an install loop by themselves.
