Seeded Content

Seeded content is a creator post that exists because you put the product in their hands on purpose, a seed, rather than because they bought it at retail or you hired them only as an ads actor. In beauty, the seed is a parcel. In mobile, the seed is access. The content still has to be a video (or photo) their audience would watch.

Seeding is a tactic. Seeded content is the artifact. If nobody posted, you did not make seeded content. You made a spreadsheet of codes.

Why it matters to an indie iOS or SaaS founder

It is the cheapest way to get the app onto cameras that already have distribution. It is also the easiest to delude yourself about: 80 seeds, 2 stories, both from friends of friends who would have installed anyway.

Quality of the seed list dominates quantity. A feed-qualified micro who actually has the problem will produce seeded content that sounds like a user. A marketplace blast will produce silence or a duty post with the energy of a hostage.

Seeded content is usually organic. You may later wish you could Spark it. If the seed email never mentioned paid usage, you do not have that right. Decide before you send the code whether this is a gift, a gift-with-ask, or a cheap paid post wearing seed clothing.

How to get seeded content that is usable

  • Qualify creators from the ICP feed, not from a purchased email list.
  • Say whether a post is expected.
  • Make first-run UX survivable (empty states, sample data).
  • Unique codes for measurement.
  • A tiny brief: which flow to show.
  • Disclose material connections.
  • Graduate posts that work into paid usage / affiliate rather than sending another free year on vibes.

Do not demand a positive review in the App Store as a condition of a gift in a way that violates store rules. Do not script fake “I bought this with my own money” lines.

How JumpTrend approaches it

JumpTrend supplies the names (and optional inbox) so seeding is not a hashtag prayer. Scout $1,500 if you will send the codes. Outreach $2,500 if you want them contacted. Contract if the seed is actually a small paid deal. Talent extra.

See app influencer seeding for the campaign workflow. This page is the artifact and the term you will see in briefs.

When seeded content is the wrong artifact

If you need a Sparkable ad next week, do not seed, hire with usage. If you need a yes from someone who already has a media kit PDF, do not seed, they will smell unpaid labor. If you need honest product footage from a practitioner who already films the problem, seed (or small hybrid) and say so.

Seeded content should look like their other videos. If it looks like your App Store preview with a different voiceover, you over-briefed or they never opened the app. Ask for a reshoot once. Then pay or move on.

Ownership of the clip after a seed

A gift does not transfer copyright. If they posted, they still own the footage unless you agreed otherwise. If you want to put a seeded Reel into Spark, you are now negotiating a paid usage add-on, politely, with money. Founders who skip this step because “we gave them Pro” are why creators warn each other about apps.

Measurement of a seed

Unique codes, a posted date, and a 7-day glance at App Store Connect. If nothing moved and the video exists, you still got an asset, maybe. If the contract did not include usage, you got a moment on their grid. Count it as content supply, then decide whether the next creator is paid. Do not seed 80 more people to “make the law of large numbers work.” Fit does not work like that.

FAQ

Is seeded content always unpaid?

No. Seeding is how they got the product. The post may still carry a small fee. Unpaid seeded posts exist; they are gifts plus hope. Paid seeded posts are deals.

Does seeding require a physical mailer?

For apps, no. Access is the seed: codes, TestFlight, a walkthrough. Physical merch is optional swag, not the product.

Must seeded posts be disclosed?

If there is a material connection: free premium, money, affiliate, say so. 'I was given this app' is honest. Pretending you stumbled on it is not.

How is this different from UGC?

UGC is a style. Seeded content is a supply method (they received the product). A seeded post is often UGC. A UGC ad from a hired actor who never got a 'seed campaign' is not.
