ROAS for Indie Apps
ROAS for indie apps is return on ad (or acquisition) spend: revenue you can attribute to a channel, divided by what you spent on that channel, inside a time window you could actually survive. For a solo iOS or SaaS founder it is a cash-flow tool, not a vanity multiple.
The formula is simple. The inputs are not. Store commissions, trial-to-paid lag, subscription refunds, SKAdNetwork opacity, and creator fees that sit outside Ads Manager all move the number. If you ignore them, you will scale a channel that is eating the company.
Why it matters to an indie iOS or SaaS founder
Venture-backed UA teams can buy installs at a loss for a year. You cannot. A “good” ROAS in a performance-marketing case study may assume a 12-month LTV model and a finance team. Your model is: will this week’s Scout invoice plus this creator’s fee plus this Spark budget return enough collected revenue before rent?
That is why indie ROAS has to include talent. A $0 Ads Manager spend with a $600 creator invoice is not “organic.” Put the $600 in the denominator. Software like JumpTrend is also in the denominator if that is how you found the person. Founders hide retainers and only count media, then wonder why profit never shows up.
ROAS also fights with identity. You want to believe the funniest video drove the week’s subs. Privacy changes and multi-touch reality say maybe. Use ROAS where the platform gives you a paid object (Spark, ASA, Meta). Use directional analysis where it does not. Pretending every organic view is a paid click will make you cut the only creator who was actually helping.
How to compute it without lying
Pick a window. D7, D30, D60: write it down. Longer windows need more cash.
Define spend. Media + creator fees + tool costs allocated to the test. Exclude your own salary unless you are comparing that time to billable work, which is a different question.
Define revenue. Net of store cut and refunds, in the same window, from users you can reasonably attach to the channel (campaign IDs, unique codes, time-boxed lift). If attachment is weak, label the ROAS estimated.
Do not blend ASA and TikTok into one ROAS and then turn off the wrong one. Intent channels and interruption channels have different ceilings.
Kill tests on payback, not on feelings. A creator whose content you can reuse in ads may justify a below-target first-post ROAS if you bought usage rights. A pretty video you cannot boost is a worse asset.
There is no honest global indie-app ROAS benchmark in this article because publishing one would be inventing a statistic. Your category, price, and retention set the bar.
How JumpTrend approaches it
JumpTrend’s marketing talks about strong returns without wasting money and time on ads and the wrong creators. Operationally, the product reduces wasted matching: you are not paying a database to list people who used a hashtag, and you are not spending auction dollars to discover who your user watches. You still might spend auction dollars later, on purpose, behind a hook.
Plans are $1,500 / $2,500 / $5,000 per month plus creator fees you approve. Those amounts belong in your ROAS denominator for the experiments they support. JumpTrend does not guarantee views, downloads, or a ROAS multiple. Anyone who does is selling a number they do not control.
If your ROAS problem is creative fatigue on a scaled Meta account, you need a different vendor. If your ROAS problem is that you never should have spent the first $2,000 learning the niche in ads, start with a feed-qualified creator list and a payback window written on a sticky note.
FAQ
What ROAS should an indie app target?
Whatever payback your runway allows. Set a payback window first (30 or 60 days), then judge channels against cash, not against a blog's 3x.
Should creator posts be in the ROAS spreadsheet?
Paid placements and Spark spend yes. Pure organic creator posts often cannot support last-click ROAS; treat them as tests with directional lifts and content you might later put into ads.
Gross or net of App Store fees?
Net. Apple and Google tax, refunds, and sales tax sit between revenue and you.
Does JumpTrend promise a ROAS number?
No. The public site talks about efficient returns versus wasting money on ads and the wrong creators. It does not guarantee a multiple.
