TikTok Shop vs App Install Campaigns

TikTok Shop vs app install campaigns is the fork between using TikTok as a storefront (catalog, checkout, creator affiliates on SKUs) and using TikTok as a demand channel that sends people to the App Store or Play Store. They share a For You page. They do not share a conversion object, an attribution system, or a creator rate card that you can copy-paste.

If you ship a mobile app billed through Apple or Google, you are in the install campaign world. Borrowing Shop playbooks. “send them a sample, give them a storefront, pay 15% of GMV”, will confuse every creator you email.

Why it matters to an indie iOS or SaaS founder

The creator-tool market is loud with Shop. Dashboards assume a warehouse. JumpTrend’s actual buyer does not have a warehouse. You have a binary and a paywall. When you land on a blog about “influencer ROI,” check whether the screenshot is GMV from a catalog. If it is, that math is not yours.

Creators themselves may be optimized for Shop: they know how to tag products, they have affiliate links, they want SKUs that photograph well. An app is a screen recording and a trust leap. You have to brief that difference or they will ask where the product link is.

Install campaigns (paid or creator-organic that CTAs to download) need a store listing that converts, privacy-safe measurement, and a reason to open the app after install. Shop campaigns need inventory, shipping, returns. Mixing KPIs (“what’s our GMV from this Reel”) on a subscription app is how you declare failure incorrectly.

How to keep them straight

Destination. Shop: TikTok checkout. Install: App Store / Play / web-to-app if you use it.

Money. Shop: item price minus platform and creator commission. Install: subscription or IAP minus store tax, with delayed payback.

Creative. Shop: hold the thing. Install: hold the phone, show the UI, narrate the problem.

Compliance. Apps that are health, finance, or kids adjacent have store and ad-policy constraints Shop sellers of candles do not.

Tools. Shopify-centric CRMs (Grin, many Hero-class products, Modash’s store integrations) are excellent at Shop-shaped work. They are optional for a solo iOS founder whose bottleneck is “who is in my user’s feed?”

How JumpTrend approaches it

JumpTrend is an app-install matching product. Avatar algorithm on real phones, TikTok and Instagram, lists of creators that customer already watches, optional outreach and contracts. It is not a Shop affiliate network and not a catalog gifting flow.

Plans: Scout $1,500, Outreach $2,500, Dealmaker $5,000, creator fees extra. The CTA it exists to support is downloads and revenue from people who fit, not a TikTok cart.

If you sell merch and an app, you may need both a Shop program and an install program. Do not buy one vendor and expect both. If you only sell the app, decline tools whose first onboarding screen is “connect Shopify.”

Creator conversations go sideways here

They will ask for a product link. You will send an App Store URL. They will ask for a commission on sales. You will try to explain IAP. They will ask you to ship a sample. You will send a code. None of this means they are unprofessional. It means their last ten brand deals were Shop.

Your brief should say in line one: “This is an app, not a Shop SKU. CTA is download. Compensation is [flat/hybrid]. There is nothing to unbox.” JumpTrend’s ICP is founders who need that sentence. Tools that onboard you through “connect your catalog” will keep dragging you back to a cart you do not have.

FAQ

Can I sell iOS subscriptions through TikTok Shop?

Treat Shop as a commerce surface for goods (and some digital products) in markets where TikTok enables it, not as a replacement for App Store billing. If Apple/Google must process the purchase, your CTA is still an install.

Why do so many creator tools assume I have a Shop?

Because most creator CRMs grew up on Shopify. Catalogs, gifting, and affiliate SKUs are the default. Apps are the awkward cousin. Pick tools that admit that.

Should my brief mention Shop at all?

Only if you actually sell a physical add-on there. Otherwise you will get a creator asking for a product link that does not exist.

Are Shop affiliates useful for apps?

Not for the download itself. An affiliate on a related merch drop is a different business. Do not confuse that commission with CPI.
