App Marketing for Founders Who Can't Do Marketing

Indie iOS User Acquisition

You do not have to become a marketer. You approve a spec: a live listing that can close, one avatar sentence, a feed-qualified list, emails, a contract, and a measurement sandwich. Then you pay someone (or a product) to scroll as the customer and nag the inbox. That is the whole stack. LinkedIn thought leadership is costume.

“Can’t do marketing” here means the hours, the social risk, and the tools built for Shopify coordinators all make you open Xcode instead. Fine. Design the loop so marketing loses to bugs if it needs more than a couple of hours a week.

Week 0: listing pass, avatar sentence, install path. Week 1: list from a warmed feed. Week 2-3: outreach, two follow-ups, yeses get a one-page brief. Week 4: posts on a quiet week. After: Spark only winners you have rights to. If you want $1-$7 CPM you need enough creators that if one does not budge, you move on.

Fix the listing first

Screenshots that show the product. Subtitle that names the user. Enough reviews that a stranger does not bounce. This is ASO, and it is packaging, not a personality transplant. Do it before you buy anyone’s Reel.

If screenshot-one does not show the mechanic, creators cannot fix it. See ASO vs creator marketing.

Write one demand hypothesis

Example: people who watch ADHD morning-routine videos would install a habit app that refuses streaks. If you cannot write the hypothesis, you are not ready to pay for distribution. You are ready to talk to users.

Not “women 18-34 who like wellness.” A phone can learn the first sentence. It cannot learn a media plan without lying to you.

Scroll as the customer

A way to find the people already talking to that hypothesis’s audience. Not a giant index. A feed. That is the avatar algorithm. Scroll as that customer on a dedicated account, or pay Scout to do it.

Stop running $20/day of Meta or TikTok against App Store screenshots and calling it a strategy. That is how ads eat thousands while teaching you little about who the app is for.

Stop treating Product Hunt as a channel. It is a launch day. Stop building an influencer CRM because a podcast said “systematize.” You do not have a system. You have eight names. Stop writing 14-value-prop briefs. One mechanic on camera. Stop promising yourself you will become a TikTok creator if you hate it. Founder-on-camera is a real channel for people who like it. For the rest, borrowing a creator is the design.

Email, then call

Founder email if you will actually send it. A delegated inbox if you will not. Follow-ups count. Then a way to pay and to reuse the clip: flat or hybrid fee, usage window, Spark if it works. Handshake DMs are how you stall at organic lottery.

Then a measurement sandwich. Store numbers as cash, codes as floor, platform view-through as ceiling. No invented CPI.

Time budget for a solo founder

If marketing needs more than a couple of hours a week, it will lose to bugs. Design the loop accordingly.

  • Week 0: listing pass, avatar sentence, install path (codes).
  • Week 1: list from feed (Scout, or a painful manual scroll you will not repeat).
  • Week 2-3: outreach, two follow-ups, yeses get a one-page brief.
  • Week 4: posts go live on a quiet week (no PH, no ASA experiments if you wanted a clean read).
  • After: Spark only winners you have rights to; kill the rest without a memoir.

JumpTrend’s Scout / Outreach / Contract ladder is that loop with more of the unloved steps boxed. Scout is $1,500 if the list is the blocker. Outreach is $2,500 if the inbox is. Dealmaker is $5,000 if the PDF is. Talent extra. No sales call, because a sales call is another thing you cannot do. You approve every creator and every rate.

Pricing honesty

You will still pay creators. Software that hides talent in a “managed” blob will make ROAS impossible. Software that lists public plan prices and says “you approve every rate” is adult. Cancel-anytime monthly is adult. Download guarantees on a landing page are not.

If $1,500 plus a few hundred in talent is more than you can lose, seed two nanos with free premium and a clear optional ask. Do not finance a fake growth team on a credit card because a thread said “distribution is the only moat.”

Who this is not for

Agencies. People with a growth hire. People whose product cannot be shown on a phone. People who need a Shop affiliate program. People who want a demo to feel safe. Those are fine businesses. They are not this buyer.

The identity trick

You do not have to become a marketer. You have to become someone who approves a spec. Avatar, list, brief, rate, usage, listing. That is product work wearing a TikTok costume. The rest (scrolling as a stranger, nagging emails, generating a contract) is what you should pay a product to eat.

You already did the hard part. Ship was supposed to be the hard part. The unearned sequel is getting the people who already watch your user’s feed to hold the app up to a camera. That sequel has a method. It does not require you to like marketing.
