Birding log apps vs a hashtag list

Creator-powered user acquisition

A hashtag list for birding log apps is a vocabulary tool. It is not a roster. I still scroll as the person who would download this on a fresh account.

People tag birding tag when they want brands to find them. That is a real behavior. It is also why the list looks public. Another shop emailed a version of it last Tuesday.

The person: US English, 28-55, already bounced off eBird they find heavy in the field and a paper checklist that blew away, watches eBird will not load on this trail and dawn-walk videos with gloves on. They watch eBird-will-not-load, dawn-walk, gloves-on, paper-checklist-blew-away. Example: someone losing a dawn sighting because the app wanted a full form on one bar of signal. The same dawn-failed-submit face two walks.

How I actually use a tag, then ignore it

Hashtag search is cheap and fast. You will learn the words. You will also meet the 300k bird-influencer whose grid is a 4k-dollar lens unboxing, because that is who buys the tag.

Then I switch to the feed. Fresh account. Real phones. Linger, save, like, comment as if I were them. Once the algorithm is trained I take whoever keeps showing up. Ideally over 50k average views. Below that, $700 a post for 1k views is a money sink.

Like a 4k-dollar lens and you will leave the dawn-gloves people. Scout is $1,500/month because some founders will still want the list without becoming a hashtag intern.

When a hashtag is enough

If you are learning that dawn trails, bad signal, not lens flex is next to eBird-will-not-load, dawn-walk, gloves-on, paper-checklist-blew-away, a tag is enough. If you are about to spend talent money, it is not.

The tag is lens-unboxing talent.
