How to write a budgeting app creator brief

Creator-powered user acquisition

A budgeting app creator brief is not a media-plan age band. It is a session: a person, a problem, a pattern of watch-time. I write it before I open a fresh account.

The sentence I actually scroll as: US English, 23-34, already bounced off YNAB’s learning curve and Mint’s corpse, watches ‘I make 55k and have 200 in checking’ and overdraft-fee videos on payday night.

Problem in their mouth: I cannot spend a Saturday categorizing last month when rent is due Tuesday.

Already tried: Mint until it died, YNAB for one free month, and a color-coded spreadsheet they stopped opening.

Watch: overdraft-fee rants, ‘YNAB is a second job’, paycheck-to-paycheck recaps, ‘I cancelled after the free month’.

Reject: the finance bro with a rented car in every thumbnail who is selling a $997 course.

Adjacent: overdraft shame, rent math, not FIRE and not crypto.

What to put on the page you send a creator

That later page is not the avatar brief. The avatar brief is for the phone. The creator page is: one mechanic, one CTA, one forbid list.

Mechanic: an envelope that does not shame a coffee, or a log that survives a variable paycheck. A live listing whose first screenshot is one envelope and a remaining dollar amount.

CTA: Add this week’s pay, assign rent, close it. If that took a webinar, the app is not ready.

Forbid: Do not ask for a full monthly budget-with-me. Ask them to log one paycheck and one coffee. No medical claims. No fake “not sponsored” energy when you paid them.

A working log they can add this week’s paycheck to without linking every bank. If they never open the product, the video will be a read-through of your website.

What to ignore

Follower counts, “micro vs macro,” competitor creator lists, and anything that starts with #budgetwithme. Those belong in the outreach spreadsheet, after you have names from a feed.

Also ignore “make it go viral.” An avatar brief cannot promise that. It can only promise match.

Example video to have in your head while you write: someone showing the YNAB onboarding wall and then paying a late fee the same week.

Paycheck-to-paycheck recaps already have the audience; an envelope that does not require a weekend of setup can sit in that recap.

Scout is $1,500/month for the list that comes out of this brief. You approve every creator and every rate. No demo. No download guarantee.
