Indie skincare brands vs a hashtag list
A hashtag list for indie skincare brands is a vocabulary tool. It is not a roster. I still scroll as your client’s customer on a fresh account.
People tag #skincare when they want brands to find them. That is a real behavior. It is also why the list looks public. Another shop emailed a version of it last Tuesday.
The person: the client’s customer is US English, 26-38, already bounced off The Ordinary they used like a chemistry set and a derm-ticket they cannot get, watches ‘I wrecked my barrier’ and ‘The Ordinary confused me’ videos at the bathroom mirror after 10pm. They watch barrier wreck, Ordinary-confusion, ‘I do not need another 12-step’, bathroom-mirror routines. Example: someone holding eight Ordinary bottles and a red face. The same barrier-wreck face two bathroom nights.
How I actually use a tag, then ignore it
Hashtag search is cheap and fast. You will learn the words. You will also meet the 2M beauty creator whose last 30 posts are PR unboxings, because that is who buys the tag.
Then I switch to the feed. Fresh account. Real phones. Linger, save, like, comment as if I were them. Once the algorithm is trained I take whoever keeps showing up. Ideally over 50k average views. Below that, $700 a post for 1k views is a money sink.
If the shop scrolls as a 12-step haul they will get PR faces the client already cannot afford. Scout is $1,500/month because some founders will still want the list without becoming a hashtag intern.
When a hashtag is enough
If you are learning that barrier repair talk, bathroom 10pm, not 12-step hauls is next to barrier wreck, Ordinary-confusion, ‘I do not need another 12-step’, bathroom-mirror routines, a tag is enough. If you are about to spend talent money, it is not.
The catalog is PR-unboxing talent who will not read a barrier story.
