Newsletter tools vs a hashtag list

Creator-powered user acquisition

A hashtag list for newsletter tools is a vocabulary tool. It is not a roster. I still scroll as the person who would pay for this tool on a fresh account.

People tag #newsletter when they want brands to find them. That is a real behavior. It is also why the list looks public. Another shop emailed a version of it last Tuesday.

The person: US English writer, 26-40, already bounced off Substack’s discovery they never got and Mailchimp’s editor they hate, watches ‘Substack took a cut and gave me no readers’ and ‘I still write in Notes’ videos on Sunday afternoon. They watch Substack-cut rants, Mailchimp-editor hate, ‘I have 400 true fans’, Notes-to-email workflows. Example: someone exporting a CSV from Substack and still not knowing where to go. The same Sunday-writing face two weeks in a row.

How I actually use a tag, then ignore it

Hashtag search is cheap and fast. You will learn the words. You will also meet the 200k creator-economy guru whose last 10 posts are course ads about newsletters they do not send, because that is who buys the tag.

Then I switch to the feed. Fresh account. Real phones. Linger, save, like, comment as if I were them. Once the algorithm is trained I take whoever keeps showing up. Ideally over 50k average views. Below that, $700 a post for 1k views is a money sink.

Like a media-brand launch and you will leave the 400-subscriber writer. Scout is $1,500/month because some founders will still want the list without becoming a hashtag intern.

When a hashtag is enough

If you are learning that 400 true fans, Sunday writing, not venture-scale media brands is next to Substack-cut rants, Mailchimp-editor hate, ‘I have 400 true fans’, Notes-to-email workflows, a tag is enough. If you are about to spend talent money, it is not.

The tag is ghostwriters and growth agencies selling list-building, not a tool demo.
