Outdoor apparel brands vs a hashtag list
A hashtag list for outdoor apparel brands is a vocabulary tool. It is not a roster. I still scroll as your client’s customer on a fresh account.
People tag #gorpcore when they want brands to find them. That is a real behavior. It is also why the list looks public. Another shop emailed a version of it last Tuesday.
The person: the client’s customer is US English, 26-42, already bounced off a fashion-outdoor jacket that wet out on mile two and a Patagonia wait they cannot get, watches ‘this jacket wet out’ and parking-lot-trailhead videos before a Saturday hike. They watch wet-out rants, trailhead parking-lot, ‘fashion outdoor’, layering-fails. Example: someone wringing out a fashion jacket at a trailhead. The same wet-out face two Saturdays.
How I actually use a tag, then ignore it
Hashtag search is cheap and fast. You will learn the words. You will also meet the 600k trail influencer whose grid is brand trips, because that is who buys the tag.
Then I switch to the feed. Fresh account. Real phones. Linger, save, like, comment as if I were them. Once the algorithm is trained I take whoever keeps showing up. Ideally over 50k average views. Below that, $700 a post for 1k views is a money sink.
Like a summit-selfie and you will leave the parking-lot trailhead. Scout is $1,500/month because some founders will still want the list without becoming a hashtag intern.
When a hashtag is enough
If you are learning that wet-out, trailhead, not summit selfies for a trip is next to wet-out rants, trailhead parking-lot, ‘fashion outdoor’, layering-fails, a tag is enough. If you are about to spend talent money, it is not.
The tag is brand-trip talent and gorpcore hauls.
