App Store vs Paid Social
App Store vs paid social is the choice, and the sequencing, between harvesting intent where people already search for apps (Apple’s store, to a lesser degree Google Play) and creating intent where people are entertaining themselves (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Meta). They are not two vendors for the same click. One captures demand. The other manufactures it.
Indie founders mash them together in a single “marketing” budget line, then declare the cheaper CPI the winner. That comparison is usually invalid. Search CPIs look efficient because the user typed a problem. Social CPIs look worse because you interrupted a video. Lifetime value and payback windows differ with the temperature of the click.
Why it matters to an indie iOS or SaaS founder
Cash is finite. If you dump a month of runway into TikTok ads with screenshot creative, you may get expensive, unretained installs and conclude paid is impossible. If you only optimize ASO and wait, you may have a beautiful listing nobody visits.
The store is also the landing page for paid social. Every creator video, Spark Ad, and Meta campaign that CTAs to “download” lands on screenshots, a subtitle, and reviews. Arguing App Store vs paid social as if they were mutually exclusive hides that social depends on the store.
Apple Search Ads deserves its own bucket. It is paid, but it is not social. Exact match on your brand or a high-intent category term is often the first dollars that make sense, if those terms have volume. Many weird indie niches have almost no search volume. Then social and creators are not optional extras; they are the only demand engine.
How to think about the trade without fake benchmarks
Intent. Store search: “I want a thing like this.” Social: “I was not shopping.” Creators sit closer to social but with borrowed trust, which can warm the click.
Creative. Store: screenshots, preview video, in-app events. Social: UGC, hooks, native audio. Reusing store assets as ads is a common way to light money on fire.
Measurement. Store: impression-to-download conversion, ASA attribution. Social: platform-reported installs, SKAN/privacy constraints, view-through arguments. Do not force last-click ROAS onto a For You video.
Retention. High-intent search users often retain better. That does not make search “better” if there are fifty of them a month.
Sequencing for a solo founder. (1) Listing conversion. (2) Any high-intent search you can afford. (3) Creator tests into that listing. (4) Spark or paid social only behind hooks that already held attention. Skipping to (4) is how ads “eat thousands”, the failure mode JumpTrend’s homepage names.
How JumpTrend approaches it
JumpTrend is a creator-powered demand engine, not an ASA dashboard and not a replacement for ASO. The bet is that scrolling the ICP’s TikTok and Instagram feeds finds people who can manufacture intent cheaper than learning it in the ad auction. Plans start at $1,500/month for the list; creator fees and any later ad spend are extra.
JumpTrend will not tell you to turn off Apple Search Ads. It will not guarantee social ROAS. It exists because founders who can ship are often stuck paying the auction to learn who their user is. A relevant creator is a cheaper teacher than a week of broad targeting, if, and only if, the listing can convert the traffic and you measure like an adult.
If your entire problem is category ranking for a keyword you already win in search, stay in App Store Connect. If nobody searches because they do not know the category exists, you are in paid-social-and-creators territory, and the App Store is the close.
FAQ
Which channel should I fund first?
Fix the App Store listing first; it is the landing page for everything else. Then buy Apple Search Ads only if people already search your terms. Use paid social (and creators) to create demand you do not have in search.
Why did my TikTok ads get installs that never subscribed?
Social traffic is colder than App Store search. Your onboarding and paywall have to teach people who did not arrive with intent. That is a product problem as much as a channel problem.
Is Apple Search Ads 'paid social'?
No. It is paid search on the store. Different intent, different creative (custom product pages), different measurement.
Can creators replace both?
Creators can substitute for some cold social prospecting. They do not replace store conversion or high-intent search. Run them as a relay into a listing you have already tightened.
