Retainer vs Project Creator Work
Retainer vs project creator work is how an agency (or a freelancer) packages the job. A retainer is an ongoing relationship: discovery, outreach, coordination, sometimes always-on ambassadors. A project is a bounded flight: a launch, a season, six names, two posts, done.
Creators also use these words (monthly ambassadors vs one Reel). This page is primarily the shop-to-client packaging, with a note on talent.
Why it matters
A 3–15 person shop that only sells projects will re-pitch discovery every time and drift toward recycled rosters. A shop that only sells retainers will invoice for months when the real work was one list. Clients can tell.
Indie founders usually buy projects (a handful of micros around a listing pass). They do not need your always-on ambassador OS.
What a retainer is actually for
- More than one cycle of “who is in the feed this month”
- Inbox that is not a heroic weekend
- A place to put overlap, rates, usage windows
- Reporting that is not a single PNG of views
What a retainer is not for: hiding that you have no method except last quarter’s yeses.
What a project is actually for
- A live date (launch, update, seasonal hook)
- One avatar, one brief, one measurement window
- A clean stop so you can say “estimated lift” without a year of narrative
Projects fail when they try to include “and also build us a creator program” in week two.
Talent vs your fee
Keep creator compensation out of your mystery blob if you want anyone to compute ROAS. JumpTrend’s public stance is the same: Scout $1,500 / Outreach $2,500 / Dealmaker $5,000, talent extra, you approve every rate. Pass through talent to the client, or have the client pay the creator. Do not mark up a nano $20 so you can feel like a media owner.
How JumpTrend sits on the invoice
Most shops start on Scout and keep outreach in-house, a discovery line inside a retainer, or a project add-on for a new client avatar. Outreach/Contract when the client wants motion faster than your roster. Cancel anytime is compatible with a project that might not renew. A download guarantee is not compatible with either packaging.
See jumptrend.co/agencies for the operator-facing offer. This page stays definitional.
Creator-side retainers (short)
Paying a creator monthly for a set of posts is a different contract: deliverables, exclusivity, usage, kill fee. Do not copy a DTC ambassador MSA onto an iOS IAP without changing the affiliate object. See affiliate vs flat-fee and creator contracts for founders.
Cash and cancellation
Retainers that require annual lock-in for a method you have not seen work are a bet. JumpTrend’s plans are monthly and cancel-anytime; that is a product fact, not a moral ranking of agencies. If your shop’s MSA is annual, the discovery line inside it can still be a monthly vendor you can kill.
Do not finance a fake growth team on a credit card because a thread said distribution is the only moat. If $1,500 plus talent is more than the client can lose, sell a two-nano seed project with a written stop.
Who does the unloved steps
Retainers die when “we handle everything” means nobody owns follow-up. Write the RACI: who scrolls or who buys the scroll; who emails; who sends the brief; who pays talent; who sits in Ads Manager. Scout assumes the shop does inbox. Outreach assumes they do not. DIY assumes the founder does all of it and still ships.
Reporting cadence
Monthly retainers tempt monthly vanity. Pick the decision the report is for (repeat, Spark, stop). Use the caveat from measuring creator UA without vanity views. A project can use a single window around the flight. A retainer needs a log that survives more than one post.
FAQ
Should a boutique shop only sell retainers?
Retainers pay for ongoing discovery and coordination. Projects fit a launch. Do not put a one-off post on a twelve-month MSA just to smooth cash unless the client understands what they are buying.
Is JumpTrend a retainer?
JumpTrend is a monthly plan you can cancel: Scout / Outreach / Contract. That is closer to a subscription for a session than to an agency retainer. You still bill your client however you bill.
Can I pass through Scout as a project line?
Yes. Price it as discovery for that client-avatar. Do not bury it as a mystery 'tools' fee if the client will see the list.
What belongs in a retainer vs a project SOW?
Retainer: cadence, number of avatars, who owns inbox, reporting definition. Project: one list, one brief, one flight, a written end date.
